Narrative
Charles Alfred Tuckey was born in Rugby, Warwickshire - the second of nine children.
Ann Morgan's* grandmother said that John Tuckey (Charles Alfred T's father) was a carpenter and that several of his sons were as well. This does seem to be the case - John Tuckey's occupation was shown as "House Carpenter" on Charles Alfred T's death certificate. However, whilst some of his brothers may have been carpenters, Charles Alfred T was a butler for much of his life.
The 1861 census shows Charles as being a buttler (sic) at Ardchatton Priory** - aged 24 and unmarried.
In December 1862, Charles married Sarah, who was also born and brought up in Rugby and that is where his first child (Sarah) was born in 1864. Then, in 1865 their second child, Charles Sheffield Tuckey, was born at Inveresragan, Ardchattan - a house not far from Ardchattan Priory. Perhaps, as a married member of staff, Charles had to find his own accomodation. Susan Tuckey, their third child, was born in 1867 at Ardachy - another house near Ardchattan Priory.
The 1871 census for Scotland returns no Tuckeys at all.
Robert J Tuckey, the fourth child. was born in Warwickshire in 1873. Then three more were born - but in Trinity, Edinburgh. The first of these was Willian Henry Tuckey in 1874. Charles' occupation was consistently shown as butler or buttler on his children's birth certificates.
Charles appears to have lived at Ardchattan for over six years and perhaps double that.
Charles Alfred Tuckey eventually died in Leith, Edinburgh in 1878 , aged 48, of typhoid fever.
The journey to Ardchattan from Rugby would have been lengthy as the Callendar and Oban Railway to Taynuilt did not open until 1880. A ferry service operated across Loch Etive at Bonawe -just a couple of miles from Ardchattan. Bonawe at that time had a sizeable quarry and a large iron smelting works - the latter employing some 600 charcoal burners alone in the area until it's closure in 1876.
* Ann Morgan is related to to the Tuckey's through her great grandmother Eliza born in 1849. Ann has been researching her family tree for some 25 years (at 2007).
** Ardchattan Priory was founded in 1230 and is notable for holding the last Scottish Parliament held in Gaelic, in 1308. After the Reformation, the Priory became a private residence in around 1610. Much of the original building is now ruined but the original refectory is the dining room for the later building. The gardens are open to the public.
Narrative
On one of the copies of the family tree written by Ross Tuckey (b1915) Charles Tuckey, (married to Sarah Ann Taylor), is shown as being a Boarding School Secretary.
