Narrative
William Henry Lister was know as Henry to friends and family.
Henry's first wife, Sarah Woodcock, died in 1875 during the birth of their second child. Just 6 months later Henry married Eleanor Wilkins in London. He had two pianoforte shops, his sons were in partnership with him by 1901 but his brother seems to have been employed as a salesman in the business up until about 1900 when he left both the business and the household. The business - Lister and Sons (1878- 1938+) and the West London Piano and Organ Co. of 246 Harrow Road, London - was very successful and Henry owned land and buildings in London, Leigh and Prittlewell (Southend).
His will, dated 1901, refers to his daughter by his first marriage, Zipporah Mary "having left home several years ago without leaving any message" and having not communicated since.
The 1881 census shows that the family, including Zipporah and his brother, John Fillingham Lister, were all living in London at No. 7 Baker Street .
The 1891 shows Zipporah aged 18 and brother John F Lister, still with the family, now living at 2 Keith Grove, Hammersmith, London.
The 1901 census shows the family (without Zipporah or Henry's brother John F Lister) as living at 126, St James Terrace, Paddington - very near to Regents Park .
Back to Henry who owned a 36 foot motor cruiser which he kept at Leigh-on-Sea. It was the first motor boat to be maintained at Leigh. He named it the "Leigh Belle". The local cockle boatmen called it the "Leigh Smell" because of it's fumes.
In 1908 Henry had a serious illness and knew he might not live much longer. In 1909 he took his wife, and his 3 youngest daughters on a world cruise on P&O's ship the S.S. Somali visiting Kobe in Japan. He died shortly after returning.
Whilst his sons inherited the business, the daughters inherited various properties and had income from rents. There is no indication that Zipporah was seen by the family again.
Zipporah Mary Lister seems to appear in the 1901 census as Zipporah Mary Hurd, living in Wolverston, Newcastle-under-Lyne in the potteries, as wife of James M Hurd a self employed "consulting engineer. Specialist on steam production plants". They had 3 children age 4 years to 7 months who were variously born in Barrow in Furness, London and Wolverston.
